“Classically trained keyboards meets jazz and rock influence, merging melody and harmony to create instantly catchy and intriguing music.”
A classically trained pianist and self-taught guitarist, I first began writing music after graduation from college. My earliest compositions were recorded with one microphone, two cassette decks, and my stereo receiver. These initial works were quite rudimentary with an occasional good idea and lots of tape hiss.
The next year in medical school, I met classmate Ron Gordon, who had similar musical interests and aspirations. We would regularly get together in stairwells and empty lecture halls to play. We ultimately put together a band, spending the summer of 1981 playing local LA clubs.
After our 15 minutes had come and gone, I continued to write and record, ultimately realizing my next big musical dream when I released my first album in 1990. I called the band/project Midnight Skye, the name inspired by a late night in a pub on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Through the nineties, I released four Midnight Skye albums. The contemporary instrumental music was largely acoustic and used harp, flute, sax, oboe, mandolin, and recorder in addition to guitars and keyboards.
The 1990’s also saw a move from southern California to Seattle. While in the Pacific Northwest, the music of “Midnight Skye North” evolved into more electric music somewhere between rock and jazz with an occasional dash of world music added.
I returned to southern California in 2002. Music took a back seat for several years while I focused on my family’s transition back to California and re-establishing a surgical practice here. But the desire to play and create slowly crept back into my life. I started writing again: re-imagining compositions and reviving unfinished ideas from the Seattle days, as well as new compositions and ideas. The end result is Midnight Skye—Into The Night, my first album in over 20 years. It’s electric and eclectic, placing a strong emphasis on melody, composition, and arrangement. I hope you enjoy the album—because I sure have enjoyed creating it.
